While communicating with coworkers, using instant messengers like Yahoo or MSN, you may receive messages from outside the office, which may hinder your work. This is why an internal communications system is always a better solution. Windows Communicator allows users to exchange messages, while certain settings are controlled by an administrator. He can decide which persons to add to the software's contacts list and allow or deny certain actions for individual users.

When you run the application's setup file, three options will be placed at your disposal. You can install a Windows Communicator server, webchat server or a client. All components have their own Install buttons. When you click one, you will have to wait until a progress bar fills, after which a setup wizard will launch automatically. It will guide you through a few standard steps and it will not take long to complete the process.

Windows Communicator's client module works like any other chat application. Contacts are grouped in a tree menu, on the left side of the interface and you can exchange messages in the larger area on the right. You may contact multiple users, on the same window and switch from one to another by clicking a series of tabs. Broadcasting a message to multiple contacts or entire groups is also a possibility. Additionally, the application lets you send and receive files. You may even send a file to an offline contact and he will receive it when he signs in.

The software makes it possible to get screenshots of a user's desktop or execute commands remotely. All you have to do is right click a contact and select one of these options. What a user can or can not do is decided by the administrator. The software is designed to be used in offices, which is why you will not be able to add, remove or manage your contacts while using the client.

The administrator can use Windows Communicator's server module to add new people to the contacts list, along with various details, organize them in separate groups and manage certain permissions for each user. The administrator can also specify his daily working hours and type a message, that will be displayed if he is contacted outside his set working hours.

Pros

Windows Communicator allows users to chat over a network or the Internet. The software's server module makes it possible to add or remove users and set various permissions for each user. The client lets you get screenshots from another computer's desktop, launch applications remotely and it supports file transfers, even if the receiver is offline.

Cons

You can not organize contacts while using the client module. Besides the features that come with standard messengers, Windows Communicator provides additional features and a better control over the chat network.
